See-Questering Newspapers

NEWSPAPER MILLS

Scanning the newspaper,
I feel my heart sink,
For the carbon sink,
Is endless papers pulping questions
From our minds.

Where is the kite that flies high on the thermals?
For ideas that are elevated,
Can be seen by all,
But instead they are billboards,
Messages to sell what you don’t need,
For newspapers are advertising spend,
They exist to invest in economic growth,
For all are lead to the cliff of conspicuous spending,
And that is the avalanche
that becomes a landfill.

For celebrity is the corporate banker,
The speculative investor,
That trades on inflated prices,
Exchanging homes for houses,
Beds for accommodation,
For community has become an economic exchange,
Of transactional accounting,
As the new communication of the future.

The world is alive and organic,
Resources were the natural inheritance,
For mother earth is rich and abundant,
She knows not ownership or restriction,
For the bounty of life is ever expanding,
The seasons regulate balance not restraint,
For there is time for rest,
There is time for action,
There is time for fulfilment,
And a time to accept fate,
For nature has no enemies,
For the natural world is an automatic pilot,
Which ignites all hearts towards home.

Yet the human condition,
Applies conditions to the unconditional,
And upsets the balance,
Prohibits the flow,
Erodes the atmosphere of protection,
For wars are ongoing,
And people have not learned to share,
Or importantly care,
For the rights of all.

Justice was to be the measure,
Was to hold the scales in balance,
Was to be fair,
To ensure order never descends into chaos,
But what happens when this becomes an economic commodity,
When fairness is obscured in clever argument,
Sleight of hand,
More deception,
Where to win is to not ensure justice is done,
But to pretend to be just,
For compensation is the sweetest victory,
Getting something for nothing,
Mocks the natural system that gives all,
And this is a story worth covering.
