Beethoven’s Last Symphony

This poem was inspired by Beethoven and written with great love for the great soul he is.

BEETHOVEN’S SYMPHONY OF SYMPATHY

Beethoven’s 9th symphony of completion,
Is a thunderous shocking tension,
Gliding gentle gentiles into the lullaby of the inner world,
Composition becomes comparisons of competition between heaven and earth,
Rising and falling in concertos,
Hopes and fears in sympathy,
Intimacy and separation of loveless solitude.

Joy and sorrow entwined as exuberance meets hostility in an uneasy union of mood swings in a chorus of demands,
To find soundscapes muted by a silent retreat,
Tormented disconnections from nature,
Musicals as the voice of love cascades over tears of loneliness,
Submerged in a torrent of imagined social shame and frustration,
To find liberation awaiting the brilliance of inspired musicals of soundless delight.

The musical key notes address
metaphors for raging torrents,
Silent reflections pedalling octaves,
Passionate desperation drumming for lost loves in a concert of living colour.

As the artist strings the heart of life in pearls of crescendos and semi-tones,
As the flute of life’s last breath,
Gasp to pause to gather strength,
To rush to reach the greatest heights,
Carrying the hapless listener into raptures,
Then falling back to earth as social conventions mummify free expression,
For the world of the composer lives to the extremes of unbridled wild passion,
For tension and relief play emotions of dis-chord to invent new riffs and complex rhythms.

The maestro discovers harmony’s symphony of sympathy,
Infusing inspiration as the dancer across hurried pages of one’s restless life,
For the moment of fervour is the testimony,
Demanding to be heard not in sound but movement,
Translating formal limits and bars into soaring freedoms of endless creativity,
Unable to be emulated by mortal man.

His inner-sense becomes deaf to outside interference,
The internal orchestra plays to the inner ear of god’s own flute,
As each tone feels for higher resonance with divine glory,
To express the inexpressible composer,
As joy learns to find celebration in the suffering and the success,
The love of humanity is the pied piper leading him home to greatness,
For it is found not through peers,
But as fears growing as shadows upon trellised walls of a sleepless hollow.

His world tuned darkness into harmony, symphonies, sonatas and operatic sopranos,
Of movements that opens the light heart into the enlightenment of feeling,
As liberty, equality and fraternity were personal notes of his
greatest scores.

This message of urgency embraces millions,
To stir the unity of humanity for future generations,
Was the fire that burned perfection into the transformation of rhythms of philosophical note,
Moving human potential beyond the veil of a contrived society.

The enlightenment of freedom was his creed,
The movement towards luminous light was his legacy,
Shape changing ideas of sculpted feeling,
As degrees of freedom were accorded the artist,
Conducting elite audiences into unknown emotional landscapes from imprisonment,
Opening the doors of communion to face the mirror of our reflection as we rise in harmony seduced by the universal language of concordance,
To emerge from the roller coaster ride of notation into the mirth of elation,
For elevation was always the freedom to see from the greatest heights,
As the gift of inspiration reflects unseen illumination as the truth of inner beauty,
That shines immortal for all eternity.
