The Insanity of Denying Our Humanity
Our world has become desensitized,
Unrealised,
As many are not reflecting on what is so,
And why it is?
Or what it will become?
They are living business-as-usual,
Focusing on themselves,
Unable to find time to be kind,
For they are busy,
In trivial pursuits,
Whilst the world is slowly collapsing,
A relapse of reason,
That knows not what it does.
I saw a woman on the street,
She appeared crazy,
Yet she was yelling out ‘you are all insane’,
In anger and through pain.
I stood to the side for awhile,
Smiling at her protest,
I saw truth in the unmoved faces running past,
From the past they are running,
I watch her bandage her foot as a ritual,
Never completing the task
just yelling and wrapping,
Snapping and repeating,
I catch her eye and smile warmly,
Calmly I wonder whether she will call me insane,
Many would as I desire to connect with her,
To see the sanity in insanity beyond her eyes,
She sees my warmth and I feel connection,
I then venture to the edge of her world,
I ask if I can bandage her foot,
Some sanity in her insanity is kindness peeking through
the clouds of her depression,
As she mumbles and turns away,
She doesn’t call me insane,
I tell her ‘much love to you’ as I am shaking,
I am not used to unpredictable people,
But my courage is the armour that shines through my fear,
As I wish to face my fear in life,
Not run on empty.
Thus, denial is the neon sign
distracting us from our shared humanity,
When we look to see,
We find the sanity in unity,
for she and I are one in community.
