The Hand that Rocks the Cradle Rules the World as One Family
This is a deep metaphor for nurturing our planet and our people. It is indeed a motherhood statement made here with love and respect. However, for men reading this please do not take offence, it is simply noting the role of caring which focuses on the real needs of the person. The male role has not traditionally been one of carer it has been of provider, hence the division of roles we see across the world.
So this poem ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle Rules the World as One Family’, I seemed to find tonight, felt deeply meaningful. I have been looking into economics, financial crisis and the notion of the rising feminine seems to come together as a possible solution.
Women often stand back and allow men to make the decisions in business matters. You see this predominantly in third world countries. I would say this is probably true if you look across the world. In Western countries this would be less so as women see themselves as independent and are moving into positions of authority. The cradle for me is the cradle of civilisation and the need to nurture the planet and all sentient beings upon the earth.
This is a critical time right now, for the future of human life depends on opening to attitudes that have been equated with motherhood and in particular, nurturing. The feminine in the past has been regarded as weakness, softness, emotional and illogical. Yet we are entering a time where it will be regarded as a strength and indeed the outline of the creative. Qualities of the feminine could include: nurturing, caring, receptive, emotional intelligence, cooperation, selflessness, love, vulnerability, wellbeing, home, health, dreams, support and communication etc. These words can be associated with behaviours and attitudes which unify the world as they extend beyond self. Women and men also have the choice to join hands and rock the cradle together. That of course would be our true nature.
For now men are to learn these qualities from the feminine aspect, as that is the part of their nature denied. To accept and allow men to cry, to feel and to express themselves balances them. To regard this expression as strength and courage rather than weakness, is a critical step for men in reconnecting or integrating the self. It takes great courage to be vulnerable.
The situation we are in today is because of the predominant focus on patriarchy as a power structure prescribing attributes including: logic, impassive, structure, power, violence, progress, money, security, corruption, greed, dominance, deals, influence and carelessness etc. This is found predominantly in the socialisation of the masculine which is evident in the media and society passed on from father to son. This focus today, in part, is an focussed energy catalysing the world to unravel as it is not the true strength of masculinity. The real strength resides in attributes which include: support, cooperation, equality, friendship, communication, conflict resolution, love, empathy, responsibility, honesty, courage, energy, endurance, challenge and humility. There have been examples of men with these strengths in his-story and they have proved to be the ones who show another way to unify the world.
This of course is my opinion, I am open to other ideas, but this feels to me to be worthy of exploration and a possible rationale of gender imbalance which reflects in ecological and economic imbalance. I do, of course, recognise imbalance in both men and women but I am referring to the dominant feminine/masculine traits that are evident in behaviours, status and roles worldwide.
I feel women have a role to play today to help the men find peace. They must also find peace and strength to express their voice without criticism. In addition to encourage children to speak up about their world and future and to facilitate all to work together in harmony, to learn to listen to each other as equals. We can indeed create a new world that more than survives. Indeed thrives as one family.
That leads me to the poem below. To remember the great strength in gentleness, beauty, selflessness and love. To value the feminine in all of us as a human family. For feminine and masculine are in both men and women.

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
The Hand that rocks the Cradle
Is The Hand That Rules The World
Blessings on the hand of women!
Angels guard its strength and grace,
In the palace, cottage, hovel,
Oh, no matter where the place;
Would that never storms assailed it,
Rainbows ever gently curled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Infancy’s the tender fountain,
Power may with beauty flow,
Mother’s first to guide the streamlets,
From them souls unresting grow–
Grow on for the good or evil,
Sunshine streamed or evil hurled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Woman, how divine your mission
Here upon our natal sod!
Keep, oh, keep the young heart open
Always to the breath of God!
All true trophies of the ages
Are from mother-love impearled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Blessings on the hand of women!
Fathers, sons, and daughters cry,
And the sacred song is mingled
With the worship in the sky–
Mingles where no tempest darkens,
Rainbows evermore are hurled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
