Can We Laugh at the Holy Fool?
This is another personal favourite. I recall the furore this film created in the Catholic community. Yet if they could have laughed at it with good humour perhaps they would touch on the feeling of the Holy Fool as perhaps God is the creator of all humour. I met a part-time Priest who was a Comedian on ABC. He told me truthfully that he heard God laugh. I laughed at that. He apparently dressed as an angel and flew on a flying fox across Swanston Street here in Melbourne.
If love is God and when we laugh we feel happy realising it is just playing can we transcend the seriousness of any issue. It takes courage to challenge seriousness as people who are serious take it seriously. Funny how life throws up these little skits, perhaps life is one big skit.
I love the bit ‘what is so funny about Biggus Dickus’. Remember school when we tried not to laugh. Children do this all the time. I love it.
It brought a lot of joy. Yes it brought upset too. But I guess this is the dynamic of life in all its colours. I think the real Jesus would have laughed as his message was to love each other. Can we do that even when people step on your toes or insult you or don’t see as you do? Can you see others opinions are not important in reality they are just different viewpoints on different paths, you have to think for yourself (says that in the film) and decide what that means for you. if you honour something honour it, if someone ridicules it, still honour what you honour and smile at the diversity. When we fight we forget the essential teachings of love. Monty Python laughed at many sacred cows. I guess that was there mission to remind us all to lighten up. That is the message I received. Over 1 million hits, others liked it it seems.
I remember in Athens when I was at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I watched them march and then you could go and get a photo. I went up and started juggling. Well the soldier stood in front of me and stomped. I kept going and then I was told to stop. The soldier said (like Brian) ‘Do you know where you are?’ My clown brain is saying if he is unknown what is the problem? I didn’t say that the brain went on Greece, Athens, Parliament bla bla without speaking out loud. I said Parliament? He said it was the Tomb for the Unknown Solider. I was then banished from there. My friend got up and simply jiggled a shoulder. Then he got angry and banished her as well. I have to say I laughed in the audience as I was so surprised at their attitude. Some could say I was disrespectful, yet my intention was not that. I just juggled for fun as a peace clown to bring smiles. The here and now is peace, yet people are remembering a soldier that is not known who died in a battle that was not peaceful. That is how I saw it. I saw the seriousness and that is how negativity surfaces through serious beliefs, it can divide people and create wars. In reality what is actually happening and who is being disrespectful? If peace is love, can we find the positivity in a situation even with different perspectives. Yet for me I just allowed it and sent love to them in my way. I wrote my own script that day and it was misinterpreted.
I hope when my time is up I am laughing at the end. I hope I see the humour in this life and don’t forget too much.
