Fukushima: Helen Caldicott Speaks about Cancer, Plutonium and Mutations

I always find it interesting where the threads of my inquiry lead me. I found myself looking for Helen Caldicott.

Here is an interesting quote:

Lionjkt on February 10, 2012

Earth Focus: Australian physician, author, and anti-nuclear activist Helen Caldicott discusses with Earth Focus correspondent Miles Benson what the Fukushima disaster really means for the health and future of the people of Japan. Dr. Caldicott also explains the links between nuclear power and public health in the United States and Europe. Dr. Caldicott received her medical degree from the University of Adelaide Medical School. In 1977, she joined the staff of Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston and taught pediatrics at the Harvard Medical School from 1977 to 1978. She served as President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23000 doctors committed to educating others on the dangers of nuclear energy from 1978-1983. She also worked to establish similar groups focused on education about the risks of nuclear energy, nuclear weapons and nuclear war. One such group, International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. She is the author of seven books including: Nuclear Madness (1979); Missile Envy (1984); If You Love This Planet: A Plan to Heal the Earth (1992 and 2009); The New Nuclear Danger: George W. Bush’s Military Industrial Complex (2001 and 2004) and Nuclear Power is Not the Answer to Global Warming or Anything Else (2006). The Smithsonian Institution named Dr. Caldicott as one of the most influential women of the 20th century.

Some notes from the video:

* cancer effects 2-5 years in Japan
* nuclear clean and green lies
* immoral to lie about science
* nuclear power produces global warming gas, massive infrastructure of mining nad enriching, building reactors, knocking them down, storing wastes for 100 million years
* not cheap paid for by tax dollars, utilities don’t pay insurance, tax payers pick it up
* no other industry is subsidised, why – it is the prodigal son of the weapons industry
* nuclear power began by Eisenhower, atoms for peace, weapons industry said ‘we require nuclear power’, trojan horse.
*Japanese didn’t want nuclear power after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, talked into it, wicked industry
* any country with reactor Syria, Saudi Arabia, they have a bomb factory, each reactor makes 500 pounds of plutonium per year, platonium lasts for half a million years, all you need is 5 pounds to make a nuclear weapon
* selling nuclear power abroad, which US is into, it is causing proliferation of nuclear weapons, it says its not, but it is, could trigger global holocaust between Russia and America who still target each other with thousands of weapons
* risks of radiation: not taught about medical implications of nuclear power in medical schools, physicians for social responsibility about war and nuclear power. Interesting subject but most doctors are fairly ignorant.
*Chenobyl – translated 5000 articles published in Russian medical and scientific literature, over a million have died as a result of Chenobyl, covered by United Nations, International Atomic Energy Agency, World Health Organisation. Biggest cover up in the history of medicine
*need informed democracy, all must understand. We are phsycians to a dying planet. We must be educated. Use PR industry to communicate the issues.
