The Speaker’s Revenge

This poem has been written by a friend of mine who chose to send me his poetry when I sent him my refugee poem. I so love it when people send me poetry. I hear the most wonderful voice.

Enjoy, I am guessing many will relate to this. Doesn’t matter what country you live in.

The Speaker’s Revenge

“Order!  Order!!  ORDER!!!” the Speaker cried in vain.

You’re behaving just like imbeciles – you’re driving me insane.

You Members here might well remember what you’re here for –

The best interests of Australia – not settling old scores.

These last few hours – you call debate?  You wouldn’t score a pass

In School Debating 101 – in kindergarten class!

I’ve had enough of stupid interjections from the back,

And I’ll bang some bloody heads together soon, so cut the crap!

True points of order, I’ll accept, and deal with as I must,

But these are rare as hens’ teeth now.  I feel it’s quite unjust.

The Opposition’s tactics are to stifle real debate,

And entertain the tabloids with the scandals they create.

The use of innuendo, being economic with the truth

Were never so routine in times remembered from my youth.

There used to be some dignity, and talk about ideas,

But now there’s only insults, ever ringing in my ears.

The Minister’s are just as bad, droning on for hours

Betraying all their principles in search of greater powers.

The shock jocks clearly run the game, appealing to the mob,

And if you dare to upset THEM, they’ll hound you from your job!

The average person in the street thinks this place is absurd.

One man one vote is meaningless, their voices never heard.

Australians let’s NOT rejoice, for we’ve been put to shame –

Another “dollarocracy” where influence wins the game.

I now invoke a useful clause from 1392,

It’s in the Rules of Parliament, though quite obscure to you.

As Speaker, it’s within my powers to send you to the stocks!

So I’ve had the chippies build a set, made up from English Box.

A copious supply of ripe tomatoes is on hand,

So voters can express their disappointment with your plans.

And genuine democracy will come back to this place

As the ninety nine percenters have the chance to state their case.
