What is the environment?

I am studying a Masters of Environment and I was asked to define the environment. Rather than write an academic piece drawing on knowledge, I found myself inspired to write a poem. As I wrote it I started to cry and am still crying as something alive just moves me.

I am returning to study after 8 years and after 8 years of poetry I find my whole mindset has changed, the feeling part of myself is deeply integrated into the thinking part, if anything the feeling is dominant. I can write academically but my spirit wants to feel the world and guides me to see it as myself, not think about it. So I am testing the teacher here and writing poetry as my expression. I am curious to know her reaction. For me I felt moved profoundly and still do now. I can’t find the words to describe why I feel so touched. I guess it is just knowing my truth.

THE ENVIRONMENTS NEVER ENDING SONG

The environment,
It is the cocoon that forms my life support,
It is the pearl of the greatest value,
For it gives me air to breathe,
It lives in me,
It gives me food enlivening my life force,
It energises me,
It gives running water to quench my thirst,
For homeostasis seeks balance in me,
It is what I see first in my morning throughout my day
And into my night,
It is where I turn when things are not right.

The natural world is my vista,
It frames the horizon of my dreams,
The rolling hills, streams, clouds, currents shape all weather,
To bring a wild life together,
Housing uniqueness and diversity,
That inspires endless poetry,
For the beauty of the environment is limitless,
As it inspires me to remember my own true nature,
As the true meaning of my life,
For it gives my life meaning,
Without it I cannot exist,
Without me it does not exist,
Therefore we are one and the same,
An earth’s song,
Where we all belong.
