A Still Life Seeks Real Value
STILL LIFE
To walk into a beautiful house,
eyes widen you are impressed,
everything is new and clean,
calm and not distressed.
Yet is it the aesthetics you are reacting to?
the movement into a new space?
the change of environment?
the contrast of a new taste?
I say this out of interest,
because each time that you return,
your eyes no longer widen,
the pattern has been learned.
Why is it we get bored with things?
we say we need a change,
we go out shopping,
the variety, the range,
but when we buy those things,
in the cupboard they remain.
Exploring the inanimate object,
some things have sentimental value,
or the subject of a sensational tale,
the attachment is emotional,
the images it evokes,
is the source of our connection,
it is the wheel,
and not the spokes.
When the sun finally begins to go down,
and I am very still,
it will not be the trivial issues,
that will be processed in my mill,
I won’t be thinking of bargains,
or the house I leave behind,
it will be my family and friends,
that my thoughts will seek to find.
