What is it all for?

This is dedicated to a person who I would say had no regard for how I felt as a human.  Yet he was my greatest teacher.  My discipline is to love under all conditions and I want you to know it is the hardest calling as your ego will take you into despair and call it injustice.  I’ve had to really work hard to see the light in emptiness from others and from within myself.  However, in reality I do not know the other, I don’t know his path, I can only know my own.  My purpose is to learn peace so I guess in order to do that I have to meet those who do not feel it, honour it or desire it.  They become my window from which I can look into the inner world of disconnection and ego.  I have to do this with love, so I can’t just ride them off and label them, I have to be able to feel compassion and at the same time see what it is as it is.  I found peace the hardest road.  Sometimes I wish I could have an easier life, but I guess when I return to my own desire, I want to know peace as reality.  Some say it is going home.  I really feel to go home.

WHAT IS IT ALL FOR?

I sit in quiet meditation,

For I do not know what to say,

Just allow life to carry me,

Away.

To work for peace is the toughest yearning,

For La Trobe was a place of higher learning,

And I had to decide if I sink or swim,

For there was no mercy or life raft waiting to save me,

It felt unfair,

For I had to save myself,

My soul was under repair.

No certainty,

No money,

No accolades,

Sustained by an unshakeable belief,

In truth,

And this has been the roof,

Sheltering me from climates of change,

As I stand on this stage,

Do I step into the lights or bow out?

Do I shout to be heard or hasten a silent retreat?

For life greets me in the moment of change.

I have come a long way through tumultuous seas,

Drifting in an expanse with nowhere to land in sight,

I allowed the currents to carry me,

For I felt it would lead me home,

To the truth of who I am,

So I no longer feel alone.

You have been a fellow traveller,

Who pushed me out on to this road,

I travelled the world in search of  peace,

Clowning around in play and mirth,

Resurrecting myself from the crucifixion of fear,

To transcend reality in search of what is real,

To simply trust life to unfold without control,

For this was my role in a world where life is bought and sold,

I chose to step out of comfort and into the flow,

For I knew this was the path where I would grow.

The highest love is to speak the truth without censure,

Respect treats another as one wants to be treated,

Inclusion recognises the human family in every face,

Joy is the moment in which one realises grace,

For this is the race I have run without competition,

Where there are no winners or losers when the journey is the reason,

For I simply sought closure and completion.

So I say goodbye to you in humility,

For you taught me that I have resiliency,

For I can love when others withdraw,

I can be fair when others don’t care,

And I can choose peace when all seem to be at war,

For our world is a precious gift,

Both natural and raw,

I sit quietly as I watch the icecaps thaw,

For we are so lost in distractions,

We are so absorbed with media spin,

That we forgot each other as we tried  to win,

Yet there are no winners until we all win,

And what we do to another returns to the self,

For this is a universal law,

Of which humanity is barely aware,

For many are sleeping still,

They are still sleeping,

For it is time to wake up,

And hear the real call,

That we are in this together for rich or poor,

Unlimited potential has no ceiling or floor,

Only a meditating presence asks you

‘what is it all for?’

For true love answers every call,

On time.

Mohandas Gandhi

“Gentleness, self-sacrifice and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion.”
