Those on low incomes would not be able to afford these rents. Professional people can and that is how inequality arises folks. Imagine how it feels for those who either live in sub standard conditions, dirty dwellings, no maintenance and ruthless Real Estate Agents. It is evident you are not respected when in the lower demographics and Real Estate Agents are not interested in you. If you have money they smile a lot more. One of my friends bought a million dollar property and the Real Estate Agent gave her a lovely box with expensive wine in it. I smiled at the bribe disguised as ‘congratulations’. It was really about remember us when you want to sell. Other friends looked for a cheap property as they had a child with autism and they were horrified at the poor condition of places not fit for living or habitation. I lived in a converted garage with no washing machine and a temporary hotplate you could plug in, no oven and a toilet shower only big enough for one.
I have seen both sides of the fence and I know the comfort of heating and not feeling constrained by money. I know the joy of ocean views. I know the sustainability of growing your own vegetables in a solar pannelled house. I know the luxury of automatic garages and mansions. I also know the hardship of living so close to the bone you can’t afford to walk down the shopping aisle to buy foods that are better quality. I know of the thankfulness of 2 minute noodles with no vitamins. I know the feeling of homelessness and the desperation that comes with it. I’ve been in all contexts. I step back and I look and I know the gap. It is not only about greed it is about judgement and the illusion of status (better than). I know what that does to people. This is not a statement of ‘them or us’ I have seen the poorest people prejudices and the richest people incredibly generous so of course good people are everywhere. However, how you live, what you drive, where you where and where you work defines your social status. People evaluate on this basis doors open or close on this basis. It is a fascinating experience to walk through life in this way.
Australia’s Median Rental Prices: How Much Will It Cost You?
Recently a lot of discussion has been centred on house prices, and their ridiculous heights in cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. But what are the medium rent prices like in some of Australia?s main cities, and what could you expect to get for that? The rent prices below are provided by Domain Group, we have also jumped onto their website to see what you might be able to get for that price!
Sydney
With a median rent price of $520 for a house and $500 for a unit, Sydney?s median rent prices are the highest in the country of any major city.
In the heart of the city (4000), units and apartments dominate, and $500 will get you one bed and one bathroom, or a studio apartment with one bathroom; Sydney?s CBD has little to no house-type properties.
Moving to the supposedly more affordable suburb of Newtown (2042), not much has changed in regards to units apart from the fact that you might be able to snag two bedrooms instead of one. However looking at houses, $520 will almost definitely get you two bedrooms, potentially two bathrooms, and more parking space.
Moving further out to the cheaper suburb of Marsden Park (2765), houses are much more affordable, with $520 getting you at least 3 bedrooms up to a potential max of 5, and probably two bathrooms. The downside is that there isn?t much in the way of apartments or units.
Brisbane
While Brisbane?s house prices are on the climb, the city?s median rent prices arent quite as high as others in the country, coming in at $400 for a house and $370 for a unit.
In Brisbane? s heart (4000), the median rent prices will nab you a one or two bedroom apartment with a bathroom, and the pickings for houses are similar, although you might be able to pick up three bedrooms rather than one or two.
Moving further out to Chermside West (4032), the median rent prices will get you three bedrooms and a bathroom in regards to a house, and two bedrooms and two baths for a unit/apartment.
Moving to Moggill (4070), the median rent prices will get you a house with four beds and two bathrooms or three bedrooms and one bathroom depending on where you are in Moggill. As with most other further out suburbs, Moggill has next to no apartment or unit living.
Renting? Think about contents insurance
Perth
Perth is one of the cities hit the least by the recent inflations in property prices, however its median rent prices are similar to Brisbane?s, with $450 for a house and $385 for a unit.
In the centre of the city (6000), the median rent prices will get you (in regards to houses) two or three bedrooms, and one or two bathrooms. In regards to units, you?ll get one bedroom and one bathroom, two bedrooms if you?re lucky.
In the slightly further out suburb of Glendalough (6016), the median rent price for a house will get you two or three bedrooms, and one or two bathrooms. The median rent price for units will get you two bedrooms and a bathroom.
In the far out suburb of Medina (6167), the median rent price for a house will get you four beds and two bathrooms. Surprise surprise, no units.
Melbourne
One of the cities supposedly hit hard by rising property prices, Melbourne?s median rental prices are slightly lower than in other cities, relatively speaking, at $390 for a house and $365 for a unit.
In Melbourne?s centre (3000), the median rent price for units will get you one bedroom and a bathroom. There aren?t too many houses in the centre of Melbourne.
In the slightly further out suburb of Footscray (3011), the median rent prices will get you two or three bedrooms and one bathroom in regards to a house. When it comes to units, its more or less the same; two or three bedrooms and a bathroom.
Going far out to the suburb of Melton (3337), there are (from what we can tell) zero units or apartments for the median rent price. As far as houses go, the median rent price will get you three or four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Adelaide
Along with Melbourne and Sydney, Adelaide house prices have been on the rise lately, but its median rent prices are surprisingly low, with $350 for a house and $290 for a unit.
In the centre of Adelaide (5000), you can get a house with one bedroom and one bath, or a unit with one or two bedrooms and one bathroom.
Moving a little further out to Kilburn (5084), the median rent prices will get you a unit/apartment with two or three bedrooms and a bathroom. In terms of houses, you can get three or four bedrooms, and one or two bathrooms.
Moving much further out to Paralowie (5108), the median rent price will get you a house with three or four bedrooms and one or two bathrooms; there aren?t any units or apartments, go figure.
How long you live could depend on where you live
So evidently there?s a fair bit of spread among the main cities in terms of what you get and how much you pay for it. Sydney is by far the most expensive city to rent in, and Adelaide ended up as the cheapest, but that doesn?t mean that you?ll find better value in Sydney, or lesser value in Adelaide.
Keep in mind that all of the above information is extremely general, and that if you?re trying to decide on an area to live in by renting, you should definitely do extensive research of your own.
