Peace in Mindanao – Rotary Club of CDO’s Focus for I.D.E.A. 2015

Last September 11-12, 2015, more than 100 students coming different schools in Northern Mindanao gathered at Liceo de Cagayan University to participate in this year’s I.D.E.A.— an invitational for debate, essay and, art competition organized by the Rotary Club of CDO Premier. For this year’s competition, the Rotary Club of CDO Premier has focused on the current issues that Mindanao is facing—the pending approval of the BBL (Bangsamoro Basic Law) and the formation of the Bangsamoro region. With the theme “Peace in Mindanao,” this year’s I.D.E.A. was aimed to two areas of focus of the Rotary International—the promotion of peace and the resolution of conflict.

Rotary Club of CDO Premier’s I.D.E.A. was intended to function as an avenue for today’s youth to be able to express their thoughts and opinions freely regarding the impending changes in Mindanao with the advent of the BBL and the creation of the Bangsamoro region. The event also served as a platform to raise awareness of the peace and conflict issues in our island. During the I.D.E.A. 2015, the youth were able to raise their ideas and have it heard by the people.

The two-day competition did not only stimulate the awareness of the youth toward Mindanao’s current state, but it also honed their skills in writing, debating, painting, and drawing through essay writing, debating, acrylic painting, and editorial cartooning competitions. I.D.E.A.’s debate finals will be televised soon through a delayed telecast while the editorial cartoons and essay are set to be published in national and local newspapers. The paintings, on the other hand, will be available for viewing at Ayala’s Centrio Mall. Prior to the Awarding Ceremony last September 12, the Rotarians have also conducted an auction for the Acrylic Paintings with bids starting from Php500.
