From Zero Point to a Universe of Possibilities

As we contemplate climate change and human systems it is a good exercise to imagine outside of the box and explore space.  To think more deeply about the natural worlds and galaxies that expand exponentially to a horizon none of us can imagine.  We are only a small world within a vast expanse some call creation, others call cosmology, yet nonetheless it causes us to see ourselves in the context of a bigger picture.  This is a conversation between Professor Laurence Krauss and Professor Richard Dawkins.  The discussion is held at the Australian National University.  For those not versed on Australian TV Q&A is mentioned which is an Australian Broadcasting Commission program on questions and answers facilitated by Tony Jones.  It typically selects questions from the audience and the audience member is asked to stand up and ask a question.  I personally have been to Q&A and I wasn’t impressed that ABC got the opportunity to select the question (not random selection) and people were told they were selected but only a few of them actually go to ask their questions.  It is an attempt at democracy but not there yet in my viewpoint.

It is interesting to see discussions but what would be more interesting is to have the contrasting view present.  For me one of the core questions is what would love do next?  I ask this as often love is left out of science and theology.  We end up thinking our way through issues without feeling for truth.  For me poetry has been one of the pathways for me to come from nothing to something, much of what I’ve written I either didn’t know or had no idea I was going to write.  I would sit and just wait for the feeling and then words would awkwardly come.  Yet what I was experiencing was a state of readiness to receive something from nothing.  Intent became the important aspect and openness to allow whatever to come without preconceived ideas or positions.  It is a fascinating topic in the discussion and one that has kept philosophers and theologians seeking truth.  So that tension is a good thing if it expands our understanding without violence or condemnation.
