Social Medicine Symposium
For those of us immersed in the day-to-day practice of medicine, or in close study of health and health care, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture. The very intensity of our focus can blind us to crucial questions of health care delivery: What’s the effect of poverty on epidemiology? How do we take into account the social as well as physical side-effects of our medicine? The discipline known as Social Medicine was launched to address such blind spots, and the Gesundheit! Institute has a unique contribution to the theory and practice of Social Medicine.
This spring, the Gesundheit! Institute is offering the Social Medicine Symposium, a non-degree program held during the last weekend of May 2013 at the Patch Adams Teaching Center in Hillsboro, WV. The Social Medicine Symposium is intended for students and mid-career professionals who seek training in global health delivery concepts and skills. Based on the cornerstone of the Patch Adams philosophy that “one cannot separate the health of the individual from the health of the community from the health of the world,” symposium participants will take all three modules during the weekend: 1) The Health of the Individual; 2) Community Health and Social Medicine; and 3) Global Health Delivery Science.

Major Areas of Focus and Program Themes
- Epidemiological Methods
- Applications of Biostatistics
- Gandhian Nonviolent Communication in Personal Relationships and International Relations
- Principles of Health Care Delivery in Resource-Poor Settings

In keeping with the original sense of the word “symposium,” this educational weekend will also be convivial—suffused with fun and camaraderie, applying our principles to the event itself, in the midst of the warmth and beauty of the ambience on the Gesundheit land in West Virginia.
