Peace Matters

I am asked to speak to the people,
On the subject that matters,
For my subject matter,
Is the missing peace.

So I ask them what is peace?
I enquire what is conflict?
Is peace possible?
Do they truly believe it?
And where will it start?
Silence is shrouded,
The moment is crowded,
One voice is raised ‘it starts with me’,
Yes my friend, it sets you free,
When you lead from the heart
Of truth.

Our world is at war,
There is no war-saw pact,
No compact for a pressure wound,
No Geneva Convention,
For unorthodox religion is the fundamentalist right,
For they are right with the fundamentals,
For those left are either ‘with us or against us’,
There is no middle ground,
For the battlefield is an urban street,
Where friendly fire is collateral damage,
For human rights were the collateral,
Backing international law,
Yet as human rights decoupled from trade,
The wheels came off the wagon,
As morals were encircled while the wheels spin upside down,
And corruption became pre-occupation,
As barriers to markets collapsed border protection,
In Saint Elmo’s fire,
Hell became a fact of life,
No longer questioned.

Peace is not a word,
Nor an award,
It exists in this moment,
For it never disappears,
It is simply not visible to the naked eye,
For fear is the dictator that has no mercy,
Peace is the lover that never leaves home,
For home is where the heart is,
And it lives in every persons sparkling eyes,
When they forget to think,
And allow the moment to carry them away,
For to laugh is to remember,
That life is the gift you were given,
As the present.

Mohandas Gandhi

“Gentleness, self-sacrifice and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion.”
